They put two palm trees outside a hotel in IOWA. Windmill palm, check it out tis the tallest one I have seen.

We planted thirty palm trees in Iowa. This is what we have currently done to protect the trees this winter. Put heat tape in the ground around the root ball to prevent the ground from freezing. Wrapped each tree with heat tape, covered with insulation, then wrapped with burlap, then wrapped with christmas trees. The heat tape is supposed to be self regulating (as the temperature rises, the wattage generated drops). We are taking temps when the heat tape is on, and are discovering that we may have over done it as temps have reached as high as 120 degrees. We currently have not done anything with the fronds. Have been told that they have to be protected from freezing, but also have to breath. Any Suggestions are welcome.

also add the same buralp over the fronds... It wont hurt them and it will let them breathe. ....

on another forum thread there is more talk of how to protect palm trees. check it out. go to palm trees and click when is it to late plant palms trees something like that and there is this guy TOM who has been doing experiments on protecting his queen palms. CRAZY stuff but i think he is on to something
