Question Windmill Palm question and help?

Its starting to warm up and I wanted to buy some windmill palms for my home. How do I go about planting them and when is the best time to plant them. I believe spring would be the best but I read late summer is also the best. I also live in ATL and would enjoy any help with buying these palms. Also another question, is the windmill palm better than the european fan palm for our area? I don't want to have to worry about it freezing come winter.

Is there any Georgia Bulldogs in this place? Class of 82' I put a picture of the Bulldogs in 1980, its the only one I could find.

Thumbs up I havent been on in a while..

This is great that they organized palm tree questions by state. I grow palm trees in Calhoun, not to far off from Atlanta about a hour and half north. The best time to plant your palms is the moment the cold winters are done. This gives your windmill palm more time to bare its roots inside the soil. Everyday its been good weather to plant, today tomorrow, the cold is pretty much over so enjoy. Also, if you are worried about your palm tree dieing you shouldn't be. I have over 30 different kinds of palms and hybrids that I grow and a bunch of perennials and cacti as well. I like gardening.

The European Fan palm looks better than the windmill palm in my opinion but both of them will do nicely in your yard. It really comes down to looks the European stays lower to the ground and clumps together. So if you plant one, a bunch of smaller ones will appear from the side of its trunk. The windmill grows vertical and slow. The fronds are your typical palm fronds.

Default Winters coming up...

I bought the European fan palm and the windmill palm a couple of months ago and they have been in the ground all summer and fall and its starting to get cold here. Any suggestions before it gets colder. I have read that wrapping up the palm trunk and leaves during its first winter is recommended. On top of that I am using christmas lights to keep them warm. I called a sales associate for real palm trees and thats what they told me would help keep the palm tree warm during the winter. Also to spray Liquid Copper Fungicide on the palm so it doesn't get any diseases.

Default Windmill Palm planting soil

Hello all,
I live about 40 minutes west of Atlanta, GA and I am seeking advice about my newly purchased Windmill Palms. I bought several 2 to 3 inch Windmill Palms that were shipped to me in not much more than their roots. I want to plant them in my house soon with the eventual plan of replanting them outside within the next year or two. However, I was wondering if the Georgia clay might be a problem? Is there any kind of special soil that I should plant my Windmill Palms in? Would planting them in Miracle Grow soil work? I heard that I should get salt free sand to plant them and if that is the case, where would I purchase that? Any advice would be welcomed as I am new to planting Windmill Palms.

Thank you,
Tom
