This native species of Australia is also seldom called the Alexander Palm. This tree is characterized by its bottle-shaped, swollen trunk and its wide, dark leaves. When planting this palm on the coast it should receive full sun, and when planted inland it should be placed in a location where it will receive full sun to slight shade. Also, the king palm is best served when planted in a protected, non-windy location such as a wall or atrium area. This palm requires a 6'-8' diameter planting area and a good drainage system. It responds well in a humid environment and its foliage needs to be watered frequently in hot, dry weather. The King Palm does not transplant well.
