I received a palm from the previous owner of my house which was transplanted from her new house to mine. I hired a "professional" to do that. 1) I don't know what it is exactly 2) it looks like it might be suffering 3) I would like to know how old it is.
As far as identifying it, I have noted that it has v shaped leaves on the fronds that face up and would hold water, spines grow from the base of the leaves. It is trunking about 8 inches high and it has about 2.5 feet of that ball of old cut off frond stuff. Its been through some unseasonably cold weather around the time it was transplanted and most of the fronds have turned gray and droopy, however, I have found 3 new fronds at the center that look green and healthy and still have that orangy brown sheath on their edges. It was transplanted about a month ago, I have watered it almost daily and placed palm fertilizer steaks in the ground near the roots. Another reason I'm concerned about it is the "professional" I hired did not bring it with a large root ball, it in fact was kind of small with no dirt. I have removed some of the old fronds already but i didnt want to overdo it. I was told at remove all the fronds at the end of feb to encourage root growth in the warmer weather (i was prescribed this for 3 sago palms which were transplanted as well) it is scarey for me to do this as the leaves of a plant have always seemed to me to be the life giving organs) please someone advise me on this! I believe it is a canary date palm which I would be so excited for, but I am no expert. What is the possible age of it and what is the prognosis? I hope I have provided enough info. Thank you!
