Default Trying to grow a Palm from a seed?

I'm just moved here to Maui, and aside form picking up a ukulele hobie, I am intrested in trying to grow my own palm tree. But I want something a little different than the usual coconut palm tree that I see the most (I think that is what it is called), and so stumbled over this Palm Tree community, so i'm here hoping for some suggestion's on what I can start to grow from a seed. I'm new at this growing thing so probably something easy to start might be great. Just trying to find stuff to do as I learn my way around a new place.

Default Thank you for the Lipstick Palm

I just recently purchased a lipstick palm and it looks beautiful but one of the five fronds must have broken through the shipment process. I figured I would have no fronds left by the time it gets to us on the island but 4 out of 5, cant complain.

Thank you again,

John M.

Over on Oahu, we've been using our compost for fertilizer, it doesn't take long to make compost here, that's for sure. I know, you probably want something sooner - I'm no expert, but I'm guessing most organic tropical fertilizers will do the trick; unless the problem is acidity or a water issue - both of which should easy to adjust.

oh yeah, "...the worm thing or... the sideway-mounted barrel that spin on a stand.

Like I said, I'm no expert - hope you can get everything green again.

Aloha Neighbor, Eonacone

Smile I like to use organic compost

The easiest thing to do to make great compost is get an extra trash bag in your home dedicated to fruits and vegetables and egg shells etc... then when it fills up or begins to smell take it outside and have a small hole already dug up and start putting it in the hole and covering it up with soil. Just put enough soil to cover the top. do this repeatedly for a couple of weeks and then the hole will be filled up and just make sure to cover the hole with enough soil. Dig another small hole for the next batch and continue to do this and before you know it, you are going to have the best soil organic compost imaginable in a month or two. Ive used organic fertilizers before and such but nothing does even remotely close to doing your own compost. Your garden and fruit bearing plants and trees will be larger, greener and yield more than ever.

First you want to test the soil you are using then the soil you are going to be planting in see what its lacking then get the fertilizer that has the best balance I use anything with a good Alkaline base since my soil is lacking alkaline. any good palm fertilizer should have
Nitrogen plus soluble Manganese, Magnesium, Potassium, Iron and Copper Sulfates. I prefer the slow release formulas. The Miracle Grow Soil for Palms and Cactus is always good to add to balance out the soil levels its already pre mixed so you just add when planting.
