The Dwarf Palmetto Fan Palm Tree, Sabal minor, very slow growing and grows low to the ground. Sabal minor, commonly known as the Dwarf Palmetto, is one of about 14 species of palmetto palm. The sabal minor is a native plant to much of the Eastern U.S. coastline. Usually stemless, the leaves arising from an underground stock. Dwarf Palmetto Palm leaf blades are longer than the leaf stalks, fan shaped, and can reach as much as 12 feet wide and 12 feet tall. The Dwarf Palmetto can be seen all through out the United States. The Sabal minor is often planted at the base of larger palm trees as an accent plant or to provide protection to and from small animals. Dwarf Palmettos are an excellent choice for mass plantings, hedges, or foundation shrubs. They are grown in a wide variety of soil types and will do well in sun or even full shade. The distribution of the Dwarf Palmetto Palm Trees extends into many Northern states where the palmetto palm can easily survive winters of heavy snow and ice. The slow growth of the Dwarf Palmetto Palm tree makes it extremely cold hardy. The dwarf sabal minor palmetto palm plants can tolerate temperatures below -10 degrees F.
