Caranday Palm Tree - Copernicia alba (Caranday Wax PalmTree)
This unique and beautiful palm tree is very uncommon and is considered rare. It is gaining popularity in many regions. The Caranday Palm (Copernicia alba) is the more cold hardy of the Copernicia species. It is Native to the humid parts of the Gran Chaco eco-region in Bolivia, Paraguay, Brazil and Argentina. For the most part it grows upwards but as new leaves emerged old leaves fold over to create a unique amazing fountain look. The common name Caranday has different meanings such as in Guarani it is called Water Palm and in English it is called Wax Palm or Caranday Wax Palm. The wax coating on each leaf was used back the ancient times for candles and other related items and is still used today for lipstick and some car polishes. Copernicia alba belongs to the same genus as the Carnauba wax palm which is another very economically important palm tree. The Caranday Palm tree can reach the maximum average height of 40-60 ft and have a spread of about 10-15 ft. The minimum temperature of the Caranday Palm is 25-30 degrees F but has been known to tolerate lower temperatures when mature. The trunk is cylindrical and has a grayish bark with a smooth surface in adult specimens. The attractive costapalmate leaves are persistent and are often different colors in every individual specimen. The leaves will range in color from light green to silver to light blue. The trunk of mature Caranday Palm trees usually finds a way for its main use in telephone and electrical line poles. The stunning Caranday Palm enjoys light shade and will tolerate full sun with well draining soil. This palm tree will not only add appeal to your landscape but will also have people complimenting how nice it looks.
Buying a Caranday Palm will sure make any garden unique with beauty.
