Product Description

Buccaneer Palm Tree - Pseudophoenix sargentii
Sargent's Cherry Palm description

The Buccaneer Palm also known as the Sargent's Cherry Palm, is a medium-sized palm found in the Caribbean, Dominica and adjacent parts of the mainland of Florida in the United States. It has also been found in places like Quintana Roo in Mexico and Belize. Commonly in many other areas, the Buccaneer palm is referred to by its botanical name Pseudophoenix sargentii. This unique and endangered palm has been considered the rarest of the twelve palms that are native to the Florida Keys. The striking Buccaneer Palm requires patience to grow and is very rare in cultivation; making this palm very hard to come by.

The trunk has a distinctive slight enlarged, waxy, ringed trunk connected to a waxy crownshaft that eventually shortens as the palm matures. The pinnate leaves of the Buccaneer Palm are semi-arching, dark grey to green with light grey undersides and has a texture of being very leathery. The growth of the Buccaneer Palm is extremely slow. Research has found that a Buccaneer Palm at 12 Feet Tall and with 113 leaf scars or remnants, indicated the tree was estimated at 120 years old. The Buccaneer Palm is estimated to only put on one leaf each year.

Popular with south Floridians, Cherry Palms are extremely drought tolerant palms. It is so drought tolerant this palm is suitable for xeriscaping which would only require waterings every few months at a time once established. Buccaneer Palms are also extremely tolerant of salt and wind and grows in well-drained, nutrient-poor soils such as limestone.

Ideally suited for coastal planting the Buccaneer Palm will do well in both warm dry temperate and tropical climates. This rare palm is grown in coastal areas and is the most pest free palm in cultivation. The Buccaneer Palm is a great container palm as it grows so slowly it won't outgrow its pot or its space.

This stately collector's palm will not only make your landscape unique it will also make your area center of attention to other palm enthusiasts. Have a piece of unspoiled nature and piece of true uniqueness.
