The commone name given to the Teddy Bear Palm comes from the texture of the fur-like brown fuzzy material (tomentum) on the crown shaft. It is Botanically known as Dypsis leptocheilos, and has many different synonyms such as Neodypsis leptocheilos and Dypsis darianii, Dypsis lastelliana, and Neodypsis lastelliana.
